Helping Your Leather Furniture Stay Clean and Last Long
Leather furniture can be an expensive investment so it’s smart to educate yourself on how to clean and care for it properly.
There are many types of leathers out there. You must remember that one cleaning technique for one type of leather may not be used for another type of leather and could prove harmful. Do your research and consult your manufacturer about how to properly care for your specific item.
It’s obvious that leather is a very porous type of material. Therefore, NEVER EVER soak leather with water. This will cause the leather to dry out, become brittle, and crack. Only use a very damp cloth and wring frequently, excess water is a big negative when cleaning with or without leather cleaner. Leather is essentially the same as your skin. So consider the same properties for treating leather. Never use harsh soaps and remember ink is the hardest thing to remove from leather. Keep pens, markers, and dyes away from leather. Even newspapers left lying on leather can be disastrous.
When cleaning a certain type of leather for the first time always use a hidden test spot.
Also, consult the manufacturer of the item for cleaning tips, strategies, and even professional cleaning and conditioning products.
Frequent vacuuming is the best thing you can do for your leather. Once or twice a week is ideal. Maintaining the cleanliness is always better than having to do multiple and risky deep cleans.
Use caution when applying mink oil, furniture polishes, and varnishes to wood trims around the leather. These products can severely damage your leather and leave it sticky. Use care when polishing your wood accents with furniture spray or wax.
When cleaning leather always use a soft cloth or very soft bristled brush. This will prevent scratching or marring the surface.
Remember to flip cushions from end to end as this will allow for even wear. If possible, also trade cushion locations with one another as to allow for even wearing between cushions. We all have favorite spots on our furniture!
